This is the project website for Future Maker - a research project of the Research Trust of Victoria University of Wellington conducted by members of the Victoria University of Wellington's School of Management and J&H Moriarty Limited; funded in August 2009, for three years, from a research grant from New Zealand's Foundation for Science, Research and Technology and Ministry of Tourism.

Effective strategies and planning reduce potential risk to an industry. The future value of each 1% of risk in achieving New Zealand's tourism expenditures is many billions of dollars. It would not be an understated goal to mitigate this risk through effective strategic planning - which, over the next 40 years, we may hope leads to a mitigation of least 10% of of this risk. This will be achieved through the use of scenario planning to explore future local and global influences that may affect visitor demand, product structure, the shape and contribution of New Zealand's unique cultural heritage to tourism. Scenarios will also explore future investment considerations, skills needs, societal contributions and public policies.

The key outcomes of this research will be well-constructed frameworks for subsequent, specific, shorter-term strategies (possibly a future New Zealand Tourism Strategy for 2020) to improve New Zealand’s competitiveness and deliver a broad spectrum of economic benefits to commercial and societal participants. Engagement with the all facets of the tourism industry and others already engaged in future studies - both locally and internationally - is an integral part of this project. This site is part of the communications programme that will disseminate new knowledge to stakeholders and the industry. There will also be linkages to related tourism research projects in Aviation and Climate Change.
